Education and Training

Certified Personal Trainer by the American Council on Exercise.

Specialty Recognition by the American Council on Exercise in Strength Training and Older Adult Fitness. Special training in Nutrition.

Mr. Scott has been studying and teaching martial arts and self-defense for nearly forty years. He began his martial arts training in 1972, when he was seven years old, and has studied Northern Shaolin kung fu and Yang Style Tai Chi under his father, Master David Scott, Sr., contemporary wushu under Masters Guo Jianhua and Luo Minghan, Kyokushinkai Karate under John Wesley Cozart and Master Denny Holzbauer, and Aikido.

To compliment his background in traditional Chinese martial arts, Mr. Scott began training in contemporary wushu forms, weapons, and conditioning in 1992, in Chicago, Illinois, under Master Guo Jianhua, former member and coach of the Hubei Professional Wushu Team and Wuhan Institute of Physical Education Team. Mr. Scott continues to study Contemporary Wushu with Master Guo and Master Luo Minghan, former member of the Hubei Professional Wushu Team and former chief instructor of self-defense and martial arts for the Botswana Police Force in Southern Africa.


Mr. Scott has won numerous awards in forms, fighting, and weapons competitions nationally and internationally. In 1991, Mr. Scott won second place in Black Belt competition at the L.A.M.A. Nationals in Chicago, Illinois. In 1992 and 1994, he was a finalist at the Bluegrass Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Scott has been a member of several demonstration teams and regularly performs at martial arts shows, cultural exhibitions, and charity events. He has performed fund-raising demonstrations for the Heart Fund, United Way, and Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Teaching Experience

Mr. Scott has taught martial arts and self-defense both in martial arts schools and universities. He began teaching as a junior instructor at the Southwest Institute of Martial Arts in Lawton, Oklahoma. He continued as the assistant instructor for Kung Fu at the University of Maryland in Munich, Germany from 1982 to 1983. Mr. Scott was the chief instructor for the University of Notre Dame Kung Fu Club, which he founded, in Notre Dame, Indiana, from 1985 to 1987. He also founded the martial arts club for the corporate sports program of Andersen Consulting in Chicago, Illinois, where he served as coordinator from 1993 to 1995.

Mr. Scott teaches the full range of Shaolin self-defense, forms, and mental and physical conditioning. He is proficient in the use of short, long, and flexible martial arts weapons. Mr. Scott also teaches non-martial arts awareness, safety, and self-defense seminars and workshops and regularly lectures to community organizations on the topics of awareness, safety, and self-defense.

Mr. Scott was the wushu coach for The University of Texas at Austin wushu club from 2005-2010, teaches Northern Shaolin Kung Fu/Wushu at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas, and is the Senior Kung Fu/Wushu Instructor at the Southwest Institute of Martial Arts in Lawton, Oklahoma.
